Many people wondered why I painted pigeons in 2003. After 9-11, and while going through a divorce, seeing pigeons was comforting and lovely to experience in New York; males would “court and pursue” the females, a 99% monogamous species. Pigeons are also a colorful, entertaining urban display of nature that most people, sadly for them, are underappreciated. Today, I think that pigeons represent both vulnerability and stubborn communal survival. After 9-11, they represented innocence and community. ~ KW Sarrow c. 2020
