Our Elastic is now ADJUSTABLE!

Starting two days ago, all our elastic masks include two small, silicone elastic stops. The elastic is a little longer, and there is no price increase! This will help our elastic mask customers get a more perfect fit! Our flexible nose elastic masks are available at $12.50. Thank you!

EMBROIDERY - BRANDED MASKS NOW AVAILABLE

Update: As of 7/3, we can now design masks with custom graphic logos, and almost any Font.

We’ve had the machine for awhile, but finding the time to investigate the embroidery process was something else! We got a good idea today of how to place text-based logos and initials, beautiful monograms are available too. We are looking at software to convert logos and original designs to stitch patters. We will set up the product soon and masks with customized embroidery will be $25 for the first, $20 for each additional with the same design, and bulk orders are negotiable.

We have just sent our latest shipment of masks to Valley Community Healthcare, we have donated over 50 masks so far. We have also just sent our first donation to the LA Regional Food Bank, and look forward to continuing to support both their and VCH’s efforts in the community. New Designs Coming Soon!

We had a day off Friday, which gave us time to explore new mask designs to better serve our customers. We found a variation on string ties which will keep both elastic and string tie masks the same size. We also found a different elastic pattern, and we are going to see if we can make it an adjustable elastic mask this weekend. And yes, we will be experimenting with making a color block mask available (-:

We are hoping our society opens up again soon with South Korean-like protocols to keep us all safe while we search for a viable vaccine, and increase testing STAT.

New fabrics are coming soon!

We just received notice that pre-ordered Hedgehog Party (with mushrooms!) and the sweet Eamon Trees arrive tomorrow. They will then be washed and dried to prepare for mask orders.

We are also very excited about offering two pigeon patterns soon, these are coming from a special artisan who prints these patterns to order, on organic cotton. One of the patterns reminded me of a work I did at Pratt, when I started painting pigeons after 9-11:

I’m not sure if I had a title for this miniature work, but I painted tiny marks on the glass slides to represent pigeons flying together, probably based on a particular corner of Brooklyn. One of our new fabrics has pigeons in flight on a bright blue background (-:

This is a postcard image from my thesis show in 2003, and the work is on exhibit at TAG Gallery this month. It is the first time this work has been shown in public since I left New York.

USPS domestic deliveries affected by COVID-19

On Friday, USPS announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on transportation availability, some services will experience delays beginning April 17, 2020. Below is what you need to know.

• USPS Priority Mail Express: This service will not experience any delays at this time.

• USPS Priority Mail: Local 1-day delivery will not experience delays. However, the 2-3 day delivery window will be extended to 3-4 days.

• USPS First-Class Package Service: 2-3 day delivery windows will be extended to 3-4 day delivery windows.

Hello Everyone! Thanks for your orders, and we hope they are fitting you. If you ordered a particular size and it does not fit what you ordered just let us know!

We recommend measuring the distance from the middle of the top of your nose, below where glasses would or do sit, and then to the end of your chin, not under your chin. If you don’t have a flexible fabric measuring tape, you can use a string or strip of paper, and mark the beginning and end areas in a mirror. I read a NYT article recently that recommended masks that go “under the chin” but our elastic masks sit on the face, not under the chin.

Beginning with new orders on Thursday, April 22 we are going to enlarge the Small masks to make them 4.5” Small, 5” Medium, Large orders will be made to 5.5”, 6” is Extra Large.

Hello Everyone!

I had a little break making masks this week, and got to go to my studio in Van Nuys where I’d been storing a few rolls of fabric that I’d bought on sale one halloween! It’s all washed and ready to go to use now, not necessarily for halloween! A coordinating solid orange for the orange patterns is available for the inside of masks, but not shown FYI.

Every Friday (and more!) during this crisis, we are making masks to donate to the Valley Community Healthcare nursing staff, permanent, washable masks to replace the disposable ones. We’ll share more about this after they received their promised masks!!

ELASTIC ARRIVES

We received a beautiful shipment of cord elastic yesterday, which makes masks easier to put on, and faster to make. We will be making our first examples today!

White Rope Elastic replaces our default string tie design. We have more of our standard cornflower blue thread on order! Black String Ties arrive tonight, and Navy String Ties are due to come back into stock between tomorrow and April 20.

Thanks everyone, we are busy fulfilling orders today. We timed a flexible nose mask start to finish. We got a lot faster when Jonathan started pinning and ironing (-:

We shipped the first two orders today. We have one large shipment going out tomorrow, and then we have to wait for more of our standard supplies.

I was so inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s speech. She is about the same age as my English mother would be today. My mother and father were both evacuated to the countryside during WW2 as children. We are lucky we are not experiencing bombs and evacuations of our children at this time, although many families are being separated by quarantine. I loved her message that this plague will end.

PIPE CLEANERS

We were having trouble incorporating a gardening wire into the flexible noses of these masks and I’m still perfecting my stitching technique! Today we switched to pipe cleaners for the flexible nose wire.

We have produced the first adult mask to send out tomorrow, and will do two children’s masks later today. We average about 4 masks a day now, but that will increase since we have finalized the design today.

Mask Making

Sarrow Studio is in full production for the COVID-19 crisis to protect families and prevent the spread of this plague’s droplets, which also happen to float around in the air for awhile. These masks do not perfectly prevent transmission, but the CDC recommends them anyway.
